The Summerville Volunteer Firemen's Association started out as a group of concerned citizens who met shortly after the end of World War II. They were concerned with developing jobs for the returning service men. After looking into that aspect of improving Summerville, they decided that a fire department was needed in the borough. In August of 1945 a charter was created for the Summerville Volunteer Firemen's Association, Inc. The next two years were used to raise funds, and in 1946 a Ford/American-LaFrance Pumper was purchased. The first Fire Station was in the Borough Building on Water Street. It was later moved to the building across from Bowser's Market on Water Street. A second fire engine was added in the 1950's. It was replaced with a Ford John Bean Fire Truck in 1960. A second John Bean was bought in 1967. In the early 70's the fire station was moved to the Summerville Civic Center (the old Summerville School.) A three bay garage was built onto the old school section of the building. A 1976 John Bean Pumper was put in service. Bingo was also started at this time as a fund raiser to help pay for the new truck. A Used Brush Truck was purchased in 1980 from the Se-Wy-Co Fire Department in Bethlehem, PA. In 1986 the Association purchased a building of their own, the old Sabil's Supply store. It was converted into a social hall, meeting room, offices, and truck storage. In 1990 a Mack/Ward 79 Pumper/Tanker was put in service. The 1976 John Bean was replaced in 1995 with a Spartan/Darley Pumper. 1n 1996 the Brush Truck was updated to a 1981 chassis. It was later replaced by a 2001 Ford Super Duty Crew Cab. |
